Luca’s story is one of light in the darkest places.

 

On December 21st—the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year—Luca was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Just the day before, he had been at his kindergarten Christmas party, celebrating with his classmates before break. He never got to go back. He missed the rest of kindergarten and most of first grade, as his life quickly became filled with treatments and hospital stays.

 

That very first night, sitting in a scary emergency room, Luca did something that would define his journey.

 

He drew a picture and wrote:
“It is a sunny day.”

 

The name Luca means bringer of light—and that’s exactly who he is.

 

About a year into treatment, Luca was surprised by Zachery Dereniowski with a life-changing experience: a Pistons vs. Timberwolves game where he met his hero, Anthony Edwards.

 

That moment changed everything.

 

Anthony’s vow to wear Luca's Wristband for the rest of his career and their special bond gave Luca strength, joy, and motivation through the hardest parts of treatment. Basketball became his outlet—his way to keep fighting, to keep believing, and to keep finding happiness.

 

Inspired by that life-changing experience, Luca created Love Like Luca—a foundation dedicated to surprising kids battling cancer with unforgettable moments of joy, just like the one that changed his life.

 

Because Luca believes every child deserves a sunny day—even in the middle of the storm.
